Sometimes the cat distribution system works quietly. One minute this family was heading out for a normal walk, and the next they were watching neighbors attempt and fail to catch a scruffy cat who had clearly decided their yard was the place to be. When everyone else gave up and moved on, the cat stayed put. With years of fostering experience kicking in, the moment felt familiar. This wasn't panic or chaos. It was recognition.

Once inside, the transformation started fast. Food disappeared, a long nap followed, and the tension he'd been carrying seemed to drain away. A bath came next, turning a very dirty outdoor cat into a soggy, unimpressed one. But wrapped up snugly in a towel like a proper purrito, something shifted. That was the exact moment he decided these humans were his people.

There was no grand announcement, just a calm, mutual understanding. He settled in like he'd always belonged there, and the family realized they hadn't rescued a cat at all. They'd simply been assigned one, right on schedule.
